Sep 15 Almost Autumn at Pilot Mountain

Sporting a gorgeous new Visitors Center, Pilot Mountain State Park has transformed itself. It is a different park now. The VC adds a whole new dimension. It's a festive and happening place on the weekends now. Always popular on the weekends, the crowd scene has shifted into the new parking lot. The frustration of parking roadside and walking in isn't completely gone but there is so much improvement. There are displays to see for the first time in the VC. There are food trucks. There is a shuttle to the summit. You can ride up and hike down or hike up and ride down.

The mini excavator is improving sections of trail. This piece of equipment has been getting a good workout. It facilitated a reroute of the popular Grindstone Trail.

The disturbed area around the new VC is teeming with autumn wildflowers.

Along Grindstone Trail, I spotted some bioluminescent Jack O'Lantern mushrooms.
