This hike was supposed to be 10 miles but add to that about .8 because the boat couldn't come up Hazel Creek as far as normal and 3.3 miles for the added roadwalk. So, it was a long and tiring day. Lakeshore Trail goes from Fontana Dam to the Road to Nowhere tunnel, about 33 miles. This section I'm hiking is from campsite 86 to Fontana Dam. To get to campsite 86, a boat ride from Fontana Village Marina is needed. After being dropped off, there is almost a mile walk to Lakeshore trail along an old road. The road goes right by campsite 86 which was the ball field for the Proctor school. The town of Proctor was abandoned in the early 1940s prior to construction of Fontana Dam. The dam flooded access roads to Proctor.
A bit early but a nice treat
There is not much left to Proctor. This house was used by the park service for years but is not being maintained now. A more modern structure behind it, now is used for storage.
Hazel Creek
The first 4.4 miles of Lakeshore trail are new to me. There were remnants of old homes and stone walls and a couple cemeteries.
Bridge over Eagle Creek
This bridge over Eagle Creek was actually built in 1970 when the trail was relocated. The trail makes a left turn here, to follow the lakeshore. This is trail I had just hiked a month ago. It had all the abandoned cars and homesite on it.
Fontana Hilton
At the Lakeshore/AT trailhead, I began the roadwalk across the dam and toward the marina. About 1/2 way, I went into the woods on the AT, so I could see the famous Fontana Hilton.
