Nov 16 Hanging Rock

Sourwood Tree

Today's loop hike is about 8 miles, beginning and ending at the Visitors Center at Hanging Rock State Park. Starting up to Moore's Knob, the branch of Cascade Creek was higher than normal but did not present any problem. It was a gorgeous day for views from the observation tower on top. Considerable litter was observed and we started a trash bag to use on the hike.

We stopped at Wolf Rock for lunch. There was a Sourwood with its golden tassels near the rock outcropping. Just a few weeks earlier I had photographed one near here, showing brilliant red leaves. Today was quite windy and I had to scramble down among some rocks to retrieve the top of a tuna can (my lunch) which had blown off. Looking down this rock gully, I could see more trash, mostly water bottles. That was a recurring sight today.

The next hike highlight is Hanging Rock itself. Always seems to be crowded up there and today was no exception. We did locate an interesting rock which was a bowl shape and could hold water. It was about 3 feet off the ground and had a couple trees which looked as though they were holding the rock up. Despite taking half a dozen photos from different angles, I could not capture a good image of this rock bowl.
