Nov 22 Ridges Mountain

Just west of Asheboro is the Ridges Mountain Nature Preserve administered by the NC Zoo. Today's hike was a short one, passing several upland pools. They all had lots of water today. There is a stone wall around one which no one knows why or how old it might be.

As we made our way to the large boulders, we passed many mature Shagbark hickories. I saw a couple Pignut hickories but no Mockernuts. Closer to the main boulders, the forest consists mostly of Chestnut oaks.

When we arrive at the site of the big rocks, there a several folks already there bouldering. The area of the large rocks is actually outside the State's property and owned by a private individual, Mr Crotts. He often allows folks to boulder on his property.

Here is one fellow climbing. He told us they were from Raleigh and this was the closest place with good boulders.

I walked around looking at the many shapes and sizes. Several large ones could be climbed easily. Mt Shepherd, the highest point in Randolph County is nearby and could easily be seen upon the rocks,
