Dec 23 Northern Birkhead Tour

Today's tour from Tot Hill explores the forest in the the northeast corner of the wilderness. Most folks do not realize when they hike the Birkhead Mountain Trail from Tot Hill, they are crossing privately owned land for about a quarter mile. The owner has been a great friend of the trail and has permitted hikers to cross the property for more than 50 years.

The chimney above is on National Forest property, not far off trail. There is a small spring nearby. The bricks are hand formed. This site is next to a small creek. There appears to be some reclaimed forest nearby which shows signs of a previous life in agriculture.

I followed this old road which could be better described as a boulevard in the forest.

Creek near homesite

I'm standing on forest service property to take this photo but the pond is privately owned.

From the Birkhead Mountain Trail, I looked for the old timber road which goes from cooler's knob down to Talbot Creek, so logging could be done on the other side of the creek. Talbot Creek cuts a fairly steep gorge through this area, too steep to get equipment down except in one spot. There is an old homesite nearby this area. I found a number of rock piles and a shelter built from the roof of an old building.

Heading down to Talbot Creek, I see a game camera set high in a tree. Then following the creek back to the trailhead, I follow social trails and have to climb over recently fallen trees.
