Dec 12 Camp 3 Trail

The June storm did not spare Camp 3 Trail. It got clobbered just like the others in the Birkheads. Of the 7 blowdowns along the "improved" section of Camp 3 Trail, I was able to clear 3, including the one above. The others have large diameter trees down, so I just enhanced the walk around trails.

A later work hike through here addressed the huge blowdown by the old moonshine still and Split Rock. I was able to cut through most of it with just a short walk around trail.

Here is a pit mine in the vicinity of Camp 3, off the trail a couple hundred feet. An old road passes it and continues to a chimney fall near Fern Valley.

Crane Fly Orchid is easy to identify this time of year. The topside of the leaf is green with small purple spots, while the underside is solid purple. The leaf will disappear in the spring and orchid will bloom in August. I've read the corms are edible and potato-like.

Stump Puffballs are way past their edible stage. These are primed to eject their spores if touched.

Lions Mane. This one is saturated and weighs like a similar sized rock.
