Jan 9 Grassy Hill Hike

A Virginia Natural Area within Rocky Mount Va city limits. There are about 5 miles of trails. We wanted to hike the entire system to fully scout this area.

There is a trailhead with parking for one or two cars but we opt to park in the nearby community college parking lot. The building is hard to miss. It is the one with solar panels all over it, various style windmills and what appears to be a geothermal heat pump.

There are a few scenic spots, like this rocky area. There is one scenic overlook up on the ridge. Of course you are looking at the town of Rocky Mount. Other than that we saw a lot of recovering forest. the rocky soil favors chestnut oaks, Virginia pines and other hardy trees that do well in more soil. I read there was some old growth here but did not see any.

We met three guys playing with their miniature monster trucks on a rocky hillside. They were preparing for a competition.
