Sep 23 Cranberry Bogs

Namesake

The Cranberry Bogs are actually a series of separately named bogs adjacent to each other. Consisting of peat, the ground is quite soft and mushy. Thus, a half mile boardwalk is the best way to experience and protect the bogs. Above is a wild cranberry. It is a very short ( 4 inches high) plant and the berry is unlike the ones found in grocery stores.

Pitcher plants grow here. Another insectivore, Sundew is hiding out there. I located some on a previous trip but none were seen today.

Spruce hems in the borders of the bogs. It looks like solid ground but is definitely not firm.

Asters are everywhere. It would seem to be about the end of their bloom period.
