Mar 7 Congaree Boardwalk

Here it is. The world champion Loblolly Pine coming in at 184' in height. The tree is not on the boardwalk but about 1/4 from it. There is another large more photogenic Loblolly on a trail. That tree was the world champ until this one was measured.

Earth is mounded up at the base. And that is some butterweed blooming there.

Somehow, many of the trees in Congaree were never timbered. There are only a few stands of old growth forest remaining in the South Carolina Low Country. Congaree is the largest tract. The national park sports a wonderful boardwalk taking you far into the swamp. The configuration is a horseshoe shape with a trail between the open ends. Today, that trail was dry and could be hiked although there were many wet and flooded spots nearby.
